Ocean Insight has been part of the Greater Orlando area for more than 30 years, with close ties to the community through its relationships with municipal leaders, educational institutions, and a robust and growing photonics hub.
Ocean Insight is excited to be part of new campaign from the Orlando Economic Partnership (OEP) and Visit Orlando that celebrates “Unbelievably Real” Orlando.
At a campaign launch event on May 9, 2022, Ocean Insight was represented by Global VP of People & Culture, Martha Gomez, and Anna Edwards, standing in for her husband, Dr. Michael Edwards, President of Ocean Insight. They joined such local dignitaries as Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, who also announced a promotional sweepstakes tie-in for Central Florida residents as part of the branding campaign. (Although Orange County comprises the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford area, the City of Orlando has a separate government.)
Ocean Insight has been part of the Greater Orlando area for more than three decades, with close ties to the community through its relationships with OEP and government leaders; educational institutions including the University of Central Florida’s College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL) and Valencia College; and companies comprising Central Florida’s burgeoning photonics hub.
Ocean Insight was founded in 1989 as Ocean Optics by researchers Michael Morris, Luis Garcia-Rubio and Robert Byrne from the University of South Florida, and Roy Walters from the University of Central Florida. From its humble beginnings, Ocean Insight has become a global company, with locations in the U.S., Europe, India and Asia-Pacific region.
Ocean Insight has reaped the benefits of its Orlando location, thanks in part to the area’s relationship with high-tech industries, the emergence of CREOL as a world leader in laser and photonics research and innovation, and the advantages of a skilled and enterprising labor pool.
“There’s a tremendous amount of technology in the Central Florida corridor,” explained Ocean Insight President Dr. Michael Edwards in a 2021 interview. “The infrastructure here is growing. The Orlando airport is certainly one of the easiest to get in and out of because of its connection to the tourist industry. So, Central Florida is the right place for Ocean Insight. Our customers may not know all that, but they benefit from it when they do business with us.”
In February 2021, Ocean Insight held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of a new 52,000-square-foot facility in Orlando that serves as company headquarters and its primary manufacturing, engineering and design location.
“The new facility means a lot for how we serve our customers because we effectively doubled our manufacturing assembly footprint,” said Edwards. “We have more space and have designed our manufacturing flow to be more efficient. It's a world-class facility, and we enjoy showing it off.”
