Optical pH sensors comprise a pH indicator dye in a matrix applied to a patch or cuvette, which changes color in response to analytes in its environment. A spectrometer measures the colorimetric (absorbance) response.
Accurate pH sensing allows us to monitor and fine-tune chemical processes, protect the environment, and study biological systems. Electrode-type pH meters are more familiar, but the emergence of optical pH sensors has improved measurement response time, expanded the range of chemically compatible samples, and enabled non-contact measurements.
Transmissive pH measurement systems allow light to pass through the sample during measurement. Sampling options include transmissive pH patches that are used in transmissive dip probes or smart pH cuvettes. A visible range light source, general-purpose spectrometer such as our Flame or Ocean HDX models, and Bifurcated optical fiber complete most setups.
